OUR MISSION

RUSTON HIGH SCHOOL IS COMMITTED TO FOSTERING ACADEMIC POTENTIAL AND INDIVIDUAL GROWTH IN AN ENVIRONMENT OF RIGOR, RELEVANCE, AND RELATIONSHIPS.

Established in 1921, Ruston High School continues to prepare our Bearcats for the 21st century, linking the traditions of the past with the challenges of the future. An institution that actively pursues rigor, relevance, and relationships, our goal is to maximize every student's learning experience. With a current enrollment of approximately 1,300 students, academic opportunities for our Bearcats include three levels of most core classes, over sixty hours of dual enrollment credit, opportunities to take multiple CLEP tests, and numerous Advanced Placement courses. We also offer a variety of electives, including new course offerings in the fields of engineering, health occupations, and radio broadcasting. Our numerous extracurricular activities ranging from clubs to athletics allow our students to excel beyond the classroom. With an "A" rating of 102.6 from the Louisiana Department of Education and boasting a 4 year graduation rate that exceeds 95%, Ruston High School stands in the top 10% of all high schools in the state, ranking in the top five 5A non-selective admission schools in Louisiana.

HISTORY

Ruston High School is proud to continue its tradition of offering a quality education to the students of Lincoln Parish. In 1921 Ruston High School was recognized by the state of Louisiana as a four-year high school. That year twelve students made up the school’s first graduating class. In 1925 the school became an accredited member of the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges and has remained a growing and viable part of the Ruston community.

In 1937 thirteen acres were donated by Mr. T. L. James for the site of our present school. As the student body grew in size and interests, the curriculum, as well as the physical plant, was expanded to meet its increasing needs. The 1976 expansion added a 1,000 seat auditorium, band and choir rooms, a 4,500-seat stadium, tennis courts, and athletic practice fields. In 1986 a two-story new wing was added to the north end of the building which consists of 8 classrooms along with 2 science labs. In 1992, Ruston High School had the honor of being placed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

The needs and interests of our student body are constantly changing. Additional programs, course offerings, and growth in numbers have resulted in the addition of buildings and classrooms to our campus along with many other upgrades. Each year, RHS continues to transform and improve to better serve our students and equip them for the opportunities that await them in their future.
